Our Leadership Roles

Standards are most effective when they’re based on clear, in-depth understanding of the problems to be solved. Whether the problem is related to business-level processes, enabling infrastructure, or the intersections of these two, the resulting standard is only as good as the combined knowledge of the standards-development team.

Because of our long experience in working with real-world customer problems, Sterling Commerce representatives are often tapped to lead or make key contributions to these teams. Among our major contributions are:

AIAG
Over the years, Sterling Commerce has participated in various ways in AIAG. Mr. Charles S. Fenton has previously served as both Program Architect for Inventory Visibility and Interoperability and as Chair of the Message Routing Work Group.
Mr. Fenton is currently a member of the Industry Oversight Team for the Advanced Technologies for Interoperability of Heterogeneous Enterprise Networks and their Applications (ATHENA B5) European Integrated Project in conjunction with AIAG.

BPMI.org
Sterling Commerce joined BPMI.org shortly after its founding. Our representative held a position on the Board of Directors for two years (2002-2004). Because we were implementing BPML in parallel with the development of the standard, our contributions helped to ensure that the standard could be successfully implemented and used in a practical way in real-world solutions.

ebXML
Sterling Commerce contributed expertise to a number of elements of ebXML. Mr. Brian Gibb was vice chair of the Message Services subcommittee. Dr. Suresh Damodaran was chair of the security sub team of ebXML Registry, and Mr. William Burcham was the technical representative from OASIS to the OASIS-UNCEFACT ebXML Joint Coordination Committee. In addition to contributing to the standard, Gibb and Damodaran authored the definitive publication in the area, ebXML Concepts and Applications.

EDIINT

Sterling Commerce provided the original specifications that led to the AS1 and AS2 standards for exchange of data over the Internet. We continue to follow progress in this area, including the current AS3 initiative.

GS1 GDSN
Sterling Commerce helped lay the technical foundation for Global Data Synchronization Network (GDSN) standards in what is now GS1 GDSN.

RosettaNet
From 2002 to 2004, our representative (Dr. Suresh Damodaran) was the Chief Technology Officer for RosettaNet. Dr. Damodaran provided major guidance to the architectural direction of the team and continues to play an advisory role. He is frequently requested as a speaker by RosettaNet, industry groups, and individual businesses around the world.

SWIFT
Sterling Commerce has been an active participant in the SWIFT Partner Advisory for Standards Automation (SPASA) since its inception. This group serves in an advisory capacity standards for further automating financial transactions among banks, securities firms, clearing houses, and sponsored corporates.

X12
With decades of experience, participation, and industry leading solution heritage in X12 it is no accident Sterling Commerce is known as, "The EDI Company". Sterling Commerce position as the industry leader is maintained through core support of X12 in collaboration with our substantial active customer presence.
