U.S. Customs Gateway

The easy way to get through Customs
As shipments of raw materials, parts, and finished goods cross national borders, they must pass through customs. Today, the United States Customs Service allows shippers and consignees to submit customs declarations and receive customs releases electronically. But to communicate with the U.S. Customs Service electronically, you must (1) use the transport protocol they specify, (2) configure it to their requirements, and (3) stay current with changes in their communications requirements over time.

A communications by-pass
Sterling Commerce has an easier way. The U.S. Customs Gateway service is a communications by-pass that offers Sterling Information Broker customers a simple, cost-effective way to manage import and export documents electronically. Just send us your import and export documents, the same way you send other files to us, and we’ll handle all communications with the U.S. Customs service.

Don’t let incompatible standards put limitations on your import/export processes. By exchanging customs documents electronically you’ll:

  • Reduce shipment delays at borders and ports
  • Reduce manual tracking of import and export status
  • Easily achieve regulatory compliance with the pending Customs Border Security Act (H.R. 3129)

Meet ACE program requirements
Sterling Commerce provides the transfer gateways to US Customs for the ACE program. In April 2007, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) began rolling out an electronic cargo manifest program called the Automated Commercial Environment (ACE) program. It requires that all truck shipments crossing into the United States from Canada and Mexico declare their contents before the truck arrives at the border. e-Manifests are mandatory at all land border crossings with penalty fees implemented to those not complying. For more information about ACE, please visit the CBP Web site.
